I'm doing an essay in English about "The Things They Carried" A Historical Fiction Novel by Tim O'Brien and I have to reference this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson and relate it to the book. If you've read the book and can help, then that would be great, if not, then please just give me your interpretation of the quote. Thank you.

I have not read the book, but will share what I think about the quote. Every man has his own courage- I take that to mean that most every person, will stand up for something.
And is betrayed because he seeks in himself the courage of other persons- I take that to mean an individual may find him/ herself at a loss as to how to cope with or face a situation, if they have never had instruction or guidance instilled within them. They are betrayed in that they lack the courage to make a decision without input or approval from someone else that they respect.
